Tom Carroll Head Coach, Varsity Defensive Coordinator
Coach Carroll is entering his 15th year of coaching high school football and is returning to the San Marcos staff for his eight season. He previously worked as the Varsity Defensive Coordinator here at San Marcos High School from 2016 – 2018, and Defensive Backs coach from 2012 – 2015. coach Carroll has also coached Defensive Backs at Carlsbad High School (2021), Orange Glen HS (2011), and Oceanside HS winning five CIF titles (2006 -2010). He couldn’t be happier to be back home with the knights and to work with an outstanding coaching staff, an outstanding group of kids, and outstanding staff on campus.

Jason Texler Assistant Head Coach, Varsity Offensive Coordinator
Entering into his 24th year of coaching, with 11 of those years as a head coach (El Cajon Valley High School, Escondido and San Marcos). Coach Texler was 56-27 as the Head Coach at San Marcos from 2012-18 and brought the school back from a decade of decline. This is his second coaching stint at San Marcos and he is very excited to be back and to be coaching with Coach Carroll and the rest of the staff.
Coach Texler graduated locally from El Cajon Valley High School. He went on to earn his bachelor’s from University of Nebraska at Omaha and his Master’s from National University. Jason played Offense and Defensive Line in high school and went on to play at college ball at Southwestern Community College, then at Nicholls State in Thibodaux Louisiana. He knows football.
Joe Jones Head Freshman Coach, Varsity Assistant Coach
Coach Jones is entering his fourth season at San Marcos High School and his third season as the Freshman Head Football Coach. Coach Jones will be coaching the Varsity Offensive Line and running the Freshman Offense in addition to his duties as the Freshman Head Coach. In addition to coaching football at San Marcos High School, Coach Jones is an on-campus AVID/ASB/History teacher and the JV Girls Lacrosse Coach, providing a daily presence for our student-athletes both on the field and in the classroom.
Prior to becoming a Knight, Coach Jones coached Varsity WRs and was the Head Varsity Girls Lacrosse Coach at Murrieta Valley High School. Before his stop at MVHS, he served as the Varsity WR/TE Coach at Murrieta Mesa High School. Coach Jones brings 11 seasons of coaching experience to the Knights’ staff. A 2012 graduate of Murrieta Mesa High School, he was a three-year letterman in Football and Tennis, Team Captain, AP scholar-athlete, and was a member of ASB. Coach Jones is a graduate of CSUSM and received his M. Ed from National University in 2020. Coach Jones is looking forward to pursuing victory with honor and guiding our young Knights as they transition from childhood to adulthood. Go Knights!
Taylor McNamara Varsity Tight Ends, JV Tight Ends
Coach McNamara is entering his first season coaching at San Marcos High School where he will be serving as the Varsity Tight Ends coach. He played high school football at Westview here in San Diego and went on to play 3 seasons at the University of Oklahoma, and 2 seasons at USC. After College he then signed with the Cleveland Brown in 2017 as a tight end. Coach McNamara got his undergraduate degree in communications from OU and his masters in Communication Management from USC. After his playing career ended in 2018, he spent 2 years working in software sales at ServiceNow before getting the itch to be back around the game of football. Coach McNamara enjoys lifting, basketball, fishing and spending time with his family, friends and dog in his free time.
Joel Banuelos Varsity Defensive Line, JV Defensive Coordinator
Coach Banuelos begins his first year on his second stint working with our Knight football program where he will be coaching Varsity Defensive Line and coordinating our JV defense. Coach Banuelos’s proud to be a branch in the legendary John Carroll’s coaching tree where he worked for 16 years at Oceanside HS. In addition to Oceanside, Coach Banuelos has also worked five years at San Marcos in his first stint, two years at Carlsbad HS and now back home at San Marcos.
Coach Banuelos has served as Varsity Defensive Coordinator for Knights and has coached offensive and defensive lines, linebackers, running backs and receivers. Coach Banuelos has won numerous CIF and state titles. Coach has won Open Division games with 3 schools, and coached in the Open division Finals with 2 schools. Coach Banuelos strongly believes in Loyalty, Hard Work, Dedication and a motto that was taught to him by his mentor Coach Campbell…”Quitting is not an option”
Chad Makihele Varsity Linebackers, JV Linebackers
Chad Makihele enters his 4th year coaching High School Football (1st with San Marcos Knights). He is a 2 sport athlete, class of “91”. Coach Makihele started coaching and mentoring young athletes in 2006. He believes in “God First” to build positive rapport with athletes while teaching football specific skills, discipline and team building. He and his wife Lieni have been married 28yrs. And share 4 sons Malohi, Hevani, Ku’ino and Kreet.
JC Nix Varsity Wide Receivers, JV Wide Receivers
Coach Nix was born and raised in Sacramento, CA. He has been married to his wife, Julie, for 27 years and has 4 children: Makayla, Tyler, Jaylea and Jase(current player on Varsity team), as well as 1 grandchild, Kaiylr, who is 10 years old. He has played college football at American River JC before earning a scholarship to Midwestern State University in Texas. Once playing came to an end, Coach Nix joined the US Armay and proudly served 20 years, retiring in 2015. His coaching career started a Kamiak HS in Washington State. This will be his 11th year at San Marcos.
Mike Fouts Varsity Quarterbacks, JV Quarterbacks
Mike is lucky to be married to his college sweetheart, Laura. They have 3 awesome children (Mathew, Maria, and Thomas). He grew up watching his uncle, Dan Fouts, play QB for the San Diego Chargers. He attended Torrey Pines HS where he played football but never started a varsity football game. After graduating high school and still dreaming of being able to play college football, he enrolled at San Diego Mesa JC. After one season of not playing very much he transferred to Saddleback JC in Mission Viejo. He then walked on at the University of Utah were he played on the scout team and earned a scholarship. He played sparingly the first 2 games of his junior season before he got his start. As the starting QB he wet 7 – 2 and led Utah to the first conference championship in31 years. His senior year he led the Utes to an 8-4 record and ended the season ranked in the Top 10 in the nation in passing efficiency. Mike was then drafted by the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL. He also participated in mini-camp with the 49ers and the following year signed with the San Diego Chargers. After finishing his playing career, Mike was an assistant coach at Bellevue High School in Washington state for 10 years. During his time there they won several state titles and were named the Sports Illustrated National Champions in 2012. After living in the Seattle area for several years, Mike and his family recently moved back home to San Diego. He and his father Bob run a mortgage company, Fouts Financial, INC., and love helping clients with their home financing needs
Jared Skinner Varsity Running Backs, JV Offensive Coordinator
Coach Skinner is entering his third season at San Marcos High School where he will be serving as the Varsity Running Backs coach and JV Offensive Coordinator. He came to SMHS after spending the 2017 – 2019 seasons at Del Norte High School coaching the same position. Coach Skinner served as the head strength and conditioning coach for two of his three seasons at Del Norte. Before joining the high school staff, he coached the youth football program for 5 seasons and served on their Board of Directors. Coach Skinner played football and lacrosse at Del Norte for all 4 years, lettering in 3 and graduated in 2013. Following his high school graduation, Jared attended San Diego State University before starting his career at Northrop Grumman. Since, Coach Skinner and his wife, Madison have started a trucking company that moves general freight for various businesses. In his free time, Coach Skinner enjoys weight lifting, and spending time with his wife, daughter, and their pit bull, Peach.
Herman Nuckols Football Coach
Coach Nuckols is a graduate from San Marcos High School that graduated back in 2001. During that time at San Marcos High School, Herman played Football, Basketball, and Track & Field for 4 straight years. He returned to San Marcos High School to Coach from 2007-2008 and then again in 2014 until the present day. His love for the Sport, the Players, and the School are his passions.
Michael Sommers Football Operations
This is Coach Sommers’ tenth year on the Knight Football Coaching Staff, and ninth working with Coach Carroll. He has over 16 years of football coaching experience, as well as 17 years coaching other sports. He played high school football in western Pennsylvania (Slippery Rock HS) before entering the US Air Force, where he served eight years. He also played football for Redlands Police Department for two years, during his enlistment in the Air Force. He resided in San Marcos for 24 years, and has three children, all of whom are Knights 4 Life. DaughterCarly, who was a Cheerleader at SMHS, graduated in 2018. Son, Riley, played on the Knights’ 2013 CIF Finalist team, graduating in 2014. And oldest daughter, Chelsea, who graduated in 2007 and was SMHS JV Cheer Coach for three years. In August 2022, Coach Sommers was blessed with another Future Knight, granddaughter Saylor Paige Sommers.
Michael Todisco Football Coach
Coach Todisco will be entering his 15th year of coaching high school football and his 5th year in the Knights football program. He will be coaching Defensive Backs and Special Teams on the JV & Varsity Levels. He started his coaching journey in the state of New Jersey, and has also coached in Orange County, ranging from Special Teams Coordinator to Defensive Position Coach and Coordinator. He is the Health & Physical Education Teacher at Knob Hill Elementary, where he has been recognized as Teacher of the Year. Coach Todisco resides in San Marcos with his amazing and supportive wife Kira, and their two boys, Arik 11, and Andrew, 8.
Sean Davidson Football Coach
Coach Davidson is originally from Phoenix, Arizona where he played football through high school. Although recruited by many colleges, Coach Davidson elected to join the United States Marine Corps. After serving combat tours in Iraq and completing his commitment to the Marine Corps, he made San Diego his home. Coach Davidson then played football for the San Diego Enforcers from 2008 – 20012 as an offensive lineman and won a national championship with them in 2012. Coach Davidson now makes San Marcos his home and coached the offensive line as San Marcos high School from 2012 – 2018. coach Davidson is excited to be coaching again at San Marcos High School and he is looking forward to this season.
James Truvillion Football Coach
Coach Truvillion is entering his 16th year coaching high school football, and 1st year coaching at SMHS. Coach Truvillion will be coaching the defensive backs. Coach Truvillion graduated from SMHS in 98, and then went on to play football at SDSU. He is the PE and Health Teacher at Twin Oaks High. He enjoys spending time with his fiancé Leah, and kids Niomi, Dominyk and Jaelyn.
